Perseid Meteor Shower

The Perseid meteor shower will take place over the next few days. The peak is on Tuesday night (12 August) but will depend on a clear sky.   If you want to look for them, look towards the northeast. The radiant is close to Cassiopea, which is quite distinctive in the shape of a W.
Thanks to local resident, Tony Nixon for this information.

Crowds flock to Avon Dassett Soapbox Derby

Avon Dassett Soapbox Derby was an exciting day of thrills and not too many spills!

Around 3,000 people flocked to watch the 22 adults and 6 juniors brave the hills. Many of the karts posed some very fast times but there were also some very creative entries, making the judging of the Best Looking Kart competition very difficult.

Our junior winners were:

  1. Freddie Morgan-Smart in Ready Freddie Go
  2. Devon Ellis in Yorkshire Air Ambulance
  3. Alicia Green in Pikachu

Devon and Alicia, our only two female entrants gave Freddie, our reigning champion a close race!

The senior race was closely fought with Brian Stanford hoping for a hat trick of wins. He was just pipped to the post by Rob Preite, who was third last year:

  1. Rob Preite in the Hornet
  2. Brian Stanford in Titty Titty Bang Bang
  3. Sam Pishorn in Gulf Arrow

The best looking karts were judged as:

Junior: Tyler Hibbins Green in A Furry Tail

Adult: Matt Beaton in Not the Soapbox You’re Looking For

Stalls, fairground rides and face painting as well as the racing kept the crowds amused.

Hundreds of pounds were raised for charity including £600 for the Hub on the Hill and £1200 for the Children’s Christmas Wish List.
